Workshop A2: Creating A Health Safety Net Within the African-American Church by Addressing Mental Health

Depression and anxiety are the most common psychiatric disorders in the United States. This presentation will include an overview of 1) the common signs of mental illness, 2) health risk associated with mental illness among African Americans, 3) how to decrease stigma by having discussions with conference participants about the myths, barriers and challenges to accessing mental health services, 4) an introduction to Mental Health First Aid, and 5) how to implement the training within the church to strengthen the church’s support network for adolescents and adults, and to implement mental health first aid
networks for adults and teens.
